How to Verify an Authentic Samsung Device Before Buying Second-Hand

    Introduction

Kenya's second-hand Samsung market offers genuine savings, but it also carries risk — from counterfeit units to stolen devices that could be blocked shortly after purchase. Here's how to protect yourself.

Step 1: Check the IMEI Number

Dial *#06# on the device to reveal its IMEI number, then cross-check it against the number printed on the original box or Samsung's official IMEI verification tool to confirm it matches.

Step 2: Confirm It Isn't Blacklisted

Contact your network provider or use Safaricom's device-check service to confirm the IMEI hasn't been reported lost or stolen — a blocked IMEI will eventually lose network access entirely, even if the phone otherwise works fine.

Step 3: Inspect Build Quality Details

Genuine Samsung devices have precise button alignment, consistent bezel gaps, and a crisp Samsung logo etching. Counterfeit units often show slightly uneven seams or a plastic-feeling frame on models that should be metal or glass.

    Step 4: Check Software Authenticity

Navigate to Settings > About Phone and confirm the software shows genuine One UI branding rather than a customized Android skin — a common giveaway on counterfeit Samsung clones sold as genuine devices.

Step 5: Get a Written Receipt

Insist on a dated receipt listing the IMEI number, seller's contact details, and price paid. This protects you legally and gives you recourse if problems surface after purchase.
